Brainstem infarction in a patient with internal carotid dissection and persistent trigeminal artery: a case report
نویسندگان
چکیده
BACKGROUND The primitive trigeminal artery (PTA) is the most commonly described fetal anastomosis between the carotid and vertebrobasilar circulations. CASE PRESENTATION We report a 42-year-old patient presenting with internal carotid dissection, and imaging features of brainstem infarction. CONCLUSION Based on the imaging studies we presume occlusive carotid dissection with extensive thrombosis within a persistent trigeminal artery as the cause of this brainstem ischemia.

Carotid Endarterectomy in a Patient with Severe Internal Carotid Artery Stenosis with Persistent Trigeminal Artery and Ischemia of the Anterior and Posterior Circulation
Occurrence of cerebral ischemia in the posterior circulation as a result of severe internal carotid artery disease and persistent trigeminal artery is rare. An 81-year-old man with medical history of hypertension and ischemic stroke presented with dizziness, nausea, and mild dysarthria. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain revealed acute infarcts in the left internal carotid artery territory...

We report the successful stent placement and secondary coil placement in a wide-necked persistent trigeminal artery (TA) aneurysm, in which the internal carotid artery (ICA) was preserved and the TA "jailed." Nine-month follow-up angiography revealed a completely obliterated aneurysm and patent parent ICA and TA. MR images obtained at 16-mo follow-up showed no infarction of the brain in the dis...
متن کاملTreatment of carotid cavernous fistulae or cavernous aneurysms associated with a persistent trigeminal artery: report of three cases.
One case of traumatic carotid cavernous fistula and two cases of cavernous aneurysm associated with a persistent trigeminal artery are reported. Since a significant rate of infarctions or hemorrhages in the vertebrobasilar territory is associated with PTA, we prefer to permanently occlude the PTA during treatment of a carotid cavernous fistula or a cavernous aneurysm if the trigeminal artery ca...
متن کاملPersistent primitive trigeminal artery associated with monocular blindness and external carotid-vertebral artery anastomosis
In this paper, we present 2 rare cases of persistent embryonic anastomoses. In one case, the patient presented with persistent trigeminal artery along with multiple foci of cerebral infarction as well as central retinal artery thrombosis. In the other case, the patient had direct anastomosis of the vertebral artery with ipsilateral external carotid artery as well as pontine infarction, aneurysm...
متن کاملReport of a Variation of the Right Common Carotid Artery
Carotid artery is the most important artery that carries the major part of the blood supply to the head and neck. The branching of the common carotid artery usually occurs at the upper edge of the thyroid cartilage. The placement of carotid sinus has also increased its importance in this area. Considering the clinical importance of knowledge about carotid artery variations, this case is reporte...
